The purpose of this thesis was to generate a better understanding of the jewelry business at and close to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. As the jewelry business is changing since several years, these changes were studied. Guided interviews with people who knew this sector by heart were conducted during spring 2016. The development of the Grand Bazaar since its foundation in 1456 as well as the intercultural aspects of this space of encounter were taken into consideration. These intercultural aspects were changing as well. The changing aspects mentioned during the interviews concerned the positive aspects of the relocation of certain enterprises towards Kuyumcukent or of the election of a newly founded board of manger of the Grand Bazaar. The relocation had a positive effect on labor conditions and pollution problems. It also effected an equalization of the area close to the Grand Bazaar. The board of manager is urgently needed as contact for the merchants of the Grand Bazaar concerning possible damage of the property. But also negative aspects like the missing of sufficient trainees or the decreasing demand were mentioned. The most negative impact of these would be the extinction of the profession of goldsmith. But this wasn’t considered as a likely outcome.
