This master thesis entitled “Collective Memory in Cyprus: Narratives, Influences, Implications, Generational Change” analyses and compares the collective memory in the north and south of Cyprus. The aim of the thesis is to examine the narratives for and the formation of collective memory and, moreover, its influence on the Turkish and Greek Cypriots’ identity, attitude and behaviour. In this study specific focus is put on the Turkish Cypriots and the question whether there is a shift in their collective memory within the generations. The methodical approach firstly comprised an interdisciplinary and comparative literature analysis. In the run up to this paper semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Turkish Cypriot participants. Through the analysis of these interviews previously gained propositions could be examined deductively. Furthermore, also new characteristics could be developed inductively. Summarising, the thesis is composed of three main parts. The first chapter is introductory and gives a rather detailed overview of the modern history of Cyprus as well as the recent developments in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC). The second and main chapter is subdivided into two parts. The first part deals with collective memories’ narratives as well as the means of officially communicating those narratives. Subsequently, the effects of collective memory on the Greek and Turkish Cypriot community are being explained and compared. The second part of the chapter provides a subjective insight into the Turkish Cypriot perception of history and identity as well as their personal attitude towards the problematic nature and future of the island. The findings of the thesis demonstrate that collective memory still has a great influence on the Cypriot society on both sides of the divide. A high percentage of people distrust the respective other side and feel – at least to some extend – threatened by them. Moreover, an existential finding is the increase of similar feelings towards Turkish nationals living in Cyprus. Furthermore, certain shifts within the different generations of Turkish Cypriots regarding several aspects could be observed. Examples of these aspects would be identity, view of history, concept of the enemy and expectations concerning the conflict resolution. The results lead to a significant conclusion: the Cyprus question cannot only be solved with a political agreement. To achieve a substantial peace within the entire Cypriot community also a civic agreement is required. Closely connected to such a solution is the topic of collective memory – which again demonstrates the relevance of this thesis. It seems obvious that at the start of a civic agreement there must stand a gradual relativisation of the mere ambivalent narratives on both sides of the divide. Eventually, the author suggests that a similar research should be conducted focussing on Greek Cypriots. Then comparing the findings to the ones in this thesis could lead to a gain in understanding and could therefore support conflict resolution.
