Öğe Potenziale internationaler jugendbegegnungsprojekte zur förderung persönlichkeitsprägender kompetenzen von menschen mit fluchterfahrung in Deutschland(Türk-Alman Üniversitesi, 2018) Kaiatz, Nadine; Struck, ErnstSince 2011, Germany has been affected by increasing migration and refugee movement due to the Syrian War and the partial suspension of the Dublin Regulation for Syrians. These movements pose a major challenge, for example, to implement methods to foster integration of children and adolescents into the German education system and society. Apart from schools, international youth projects and non-formal learning settings are able to improve individual learning processes and foster social participation. Despite their potential success, there is a gap in the literature explaining the effectiveness of international youth projects amongst adolescent refugees. This study analyses the potential of international youth projects in supporting three pillars of personal development: Personal Identity, Intercultural Agency and bottom-up activities. The study employed an experimental qualitative research. Transcripts of individual interviews were analysed using three categories and 10 sub-categories that were proposed by Thomas (2006) and validated through interviews with experts. Findings revealed a positive effect of the category Personal Identity on two sub categories reflexivity and intercultural agency. In particular, the study found a positive influence on the level of reflexivity on personal and foreign culture reference systems. Regarding Intercultural agency, limited effects were observed for sub-categories. Unbiased perception of culturally specific actions and thoughts and Openness towards other environments. Likewise, only partial effects were found for bottom-up activities and the sub-categories participation at other activities and qualifying measures and engaging with social and voluntary programmes. No effect was found for personal identity and the sub-categories increased self-confidence, self-esteem and sense of responsibility. Similarly, intercultural agency and its sub-category acknowledgement of interpersonal differences revealed no effect. Overall, the study confirmed that international youth projects facilitates the sensitisation of participants and thus initiates processes of reflexivity and awarenessbuilding.
