Öğe Galerien in Istanbul(Türk-Alman Üniversitesi, 2017) Glass, Roman; Struck, ErnstContemporary art and their corresponding places, the galleries, are an integral part of Turkish culture in general and Istanbul's in particular. Art is acting to ignite Third Spaces, that are forming an important hub for intercultural connections. The Third Space is the synthesis that results from different people interacting with each other. It is distinct from the spaces containing the respective culture of just one party. Out of this context this work questions how the Creative Milieu of contemporary art is imagining the Third Space of working in the galleries of Istanbul. Grounded Theory as a method is used to give way for a theory to emerge that extends the notion of the Third Space. To gather the data nine interviews with nine actors of Istanbul's contemporary art scene were conducted. Who to interview was decided iteratively through constructing roles out of the already analysed interviews, and then progressing through a snowball pattern to reach full theoretical sampling. Through that approach the network structure of the Third Space became apparent as the fundamental infrastructure of the Third Space. This theoretical model is able to explain spatial reconfigurations as well as changes in the art itself. A practical implication that follows this theoretical result is that the network connection are of primary interest for an understanding of intercultural competence and learning. Contemporary art is working through the flow of values, ideas and images. Further research could make the results even more so relevant by comparing different cities and regions to Istanbul.
