    Konzeptionen von interkulturalität in Yadé Karas “Selam Berlin” und “Café Cyprus”

    This thesis is an analysis of the novels “Selam Berlin” and “Café Cyprus” of GermanTurkish writer Yadé Kara. The approach which is applied here is an interdisciplinary one, and combines the methods of literary studies and cultural anthropology. In the first part of the work, the most important and basic theories are discussed, that is to say, the intercultural approach to analyse literary works by Doris Bachmann-Medick, the development of “Interkulturelle Literatur” in Germany and the postcolonial perspective in literary studies. Bachmann-Medick demands an expansion of the classical philological approach with an anthropological one for the analysis of intercultural literature. It is essential to ask questions like for example: How is the “Other” displayed in the novels? Is it still just a reification of the dichotomizing concepts of “We” and “They”, or is it shown in a multi-faceted and differentiated way? Are terms like “nation” or “culture” seen in their dynamic and fluid characteristic or is there an attempt to force them into static and essentialist categorizations? Another important question is how literary canons are defined and which authors and works find recognition in these. Here, the power relations which are at play in a society have to be uncovered and put into question. The postcolonial perspective makes it possible to go beyond traditional concepts of homogeneous cultures and nation states. The orientalist practice, which still reificates the dichotomizing oppositions of “We” and “They” in the western hemisphere, becomes clear through the novels and is a part of the analysis, where light is thrown on. The theories just mentioned, serve to explain a contemporary, dynamic and fluid notion of concepts and terms like “culture”, “identity”, “hybridity”, and “belonging”. These are some of the central motifs of Karas work. They are put into question with the help of the above mentioned theories, and through that it is possible to deconstruct the reification and the a priori existence of these concepts. It could also be shown how the fictional and the real intermingle and how literature, in a way, also creates social facts. Another important point is, how discourse reproduces stereotypes and clichés and how difficult it is for many persons to overcome this view. The protagonists of Kara´s novels show this in a vivid way.
